"It would be too easy for the Penniless People of
Bulgaria to actually be from Bulgaria. Instead the band are a fourpiece from Finland, a place
hardly renowned as a rock`nīroll hotbed. But donīt let that put you off, because PPOB are a
fine punk band. Motorhead, for instance, is a storming Pixies-like song of a kind that Frank
Black seems to have forgotten how to write these days. A similar sense of dynamics runs
through the whole album. PPOB are obviously influenced by seminal American punk bands
such as Sonic Youth and Husker Du, but theyīve got enough character (partly because of
their accents, which give the vocals an odd, almost otherworldy quality) not to sound too
much like their heroes. They have already built a strong live reputation in Scandinavia,
sometimes playing as many as three shows a night. On the strength of "Velocity",
their third album, gigging through the rest of Europe could spread their reputation."
